A Conversation with Lukas Maaß - September 2026

In conversation with Lukas Maaß, class of 2025—Lukas is grateful for his wonderful time in school, for the encouragement, support, and trust he received as a student. Thanks to this approach and the way he was treated, he developed a strong sense of self-confidence as a young person and took on responsibility early on. He was already involved in many areas at school and has been politically active since 2024!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your time at Schloss-Schule?
First of all, I can say that I truly enjoyed going to Schloss-Schule every single day. When it was time to switch schools after 4th grade, I visited the Schloss-Schule with my elementary school class and immediately felt at home. For me, the decision was really made right then and there—I wanted to be a Schloss-Schule student! That wish then came true.
What I really appreciated—and still appreciate—about the Schloss-Schule is the great sense of community and the friendships—I got to know so many wonderful people during my time there. For me personally, the school was a fantastic opportunity to grow as a person and as a student. I’ve also always enjoyed getting involved—first as class representative, and toward the end as student body president—and I hosted school events. I was also very active in music, thanks in large part to the support of Sarah Maurer.

Why don’t you tell us a bit about your school experience before you came to SK?
I attended elementary school in Kirchberg from first through fourth grade. There were over 30 kids in our class. It was always very lively and also rather restless. At that time, they still used the combined-class model, where first and second graders, and third and fourth graders, were sometimes taught together.

What has changed in Kirchberg?
At the Schloss-Schule, the smaller classrooms and smaller class sizes were the biggest—but also a very positive—change for me. Because of the smaller classes, we also had much closer contact with one another than I was used to before. For better or worse, you had some kind of interaction with everyone.

What did you find most formative? What values, life lessons, and other things still guide you today?
During my time at the school, I felt that everyone was committed to the school and that there was a strong sense of unity. This was evident in many small—but also larger—ways. The Schloss School is, in part, a foundation and also an integral part of the identity of everyone who is part of the Schloss School community. As an alumnus, I’ve now experienced firsthand that the very fact of having been a Schloss-Schule student creates a bond with other alumni, no matter how big the age difference is. That’s really wonderful!

What happened after Schloss-Schule?
After graduating from high school in 2025, I began an apprenticeship as a bank clerk at the Bausparkasse in Schwäbisch Hall. There, I quickly realized that I wanted to do “more,” and I was given the opportunity to switch to a dual degree program starting in the fall of 2026. I’ve now started in the field of Digital Business Management and am looking forward to this new challenge! In the months leading up to this, the building society gave me the chance to get a taste of various departments and gain my first impressions of my future work environment. There, I learned about different areas of focus and was already able to prepare myself thematically for my studies. I plan to complete my studies in 2029.
I’ve also been involved in politics since 2024. At age 17, I was elected to the municipal council in Kirchberg, and I’m now active in the CDU and the Junge Union. I am currently the deputy district chair of the Junge Union in the Schwäbisch Hall district. I owe my political involvement—and the idea of pursuing this path—to Jürgen Scharch. He approached me back then and essentially set me on this path.
I find interacting with people in the political and business worlds very exciting and really enjoy it!
I also enjoy actively helping to shape things. That’s what drives me and keeps me motivated!

If you’ve ever had a class or alumni reunion, what stories and anecdotes are a must?
Generallyspeaking, I can say that we always—or at least very often—had a lighthearted, humorous rapport with one another. We often laughed together. Specifically, I can tell you about our senior prank. In this case, the teachers were the ones who got the short end of the stick—they all received punishments and had to complete tasks as a result. There were some really funny moments.

What are you grateful for?
I’m truly very grateful for my time at the Schloss-Schule. The support from the teachers, the friendships, the experiences, and the fact that I simply had a great time in school—I’m very grateful for all of that!

Looking back on your school days, what would you do differently today?
Everything was fine just the way it was! Maybe I could have tried a little harder on my final exams, but in the end, everything turned out well!

Would you like to support the school and the current students?
If so, what do you have in mind?

I’ve been involved with the Schloss-Schul-Verein since July 2026. I’m really looking forward to this new role!
Looking ahead—once a few years have passed and I’ve gained enough experience to pass something on to others—I can definitely see myself becoming active as a mentor and continuing to support the association and the school. I’ve experienced firsthand how important it can be to have someone who takes you under their wing, gives you feedback, supports you, and, for example, opens up their network to you. I’d also like to help ensure that all children who want a good education have access to it, regardless of their financial background.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
The Schloss-Schule has an unshakable core. For me, the school thrives because of the people who work here, contribute, and are actively involved—as well as, of course, the students and the young people in the boarding school. Its history, spanning over 111 years, shows that the school has already weathered many challenges and has provided many young people with a wonderful foundation upon which they can build their futures. This core remains unshakable, even in times of uncertainty.
