State-Approved Secondary School for Advanced Studies - Earn Your Abitur with a Mittlere Reife

Abitur After Realschule: What Comes Next After the Mittlere Reife?

Not every educational path is the same—and sometimes the right path to the Abitur leads through a Realschule or Werkrealschule. Earning the Mittlere Reife opens up new opportunities to continue one’s educational journey and work toward the general university entrance qualification. At the state-recognized Schloss-Schule Kirchberg, our “Aufbaugymnasium” program offers these students the chance to pursue a high school education path based on their previous academic achievements.
Our focus is not only on academic requirements but also on the individual strengths, interests, and development potential of each student.
Through personalized support, targeted support, a reliable daily structure, and the family-like learning environment of our high school and boarding school, we support these young people as they settle into their new learning environment, realize their potential, and gradually work their way toward earning their Abitur.

Our transition high school is open both to students who live at our boarding school and to young people from the surrounding area who wish to attend the high school as day students.

Whether admission to our preparatory high school is possible depends on the student’s previous educational background, academic performance, and the applicable admission requirements. We provide families with individualized counseling on the available options and the most suitable path forward.

  • Grade Point Average: The Mittlere Reife diploma must show a grade point average of at least 3.0 in the core subjects of German, mathematics, and English.
  • No “5” inCore Subjects: In none of these three subjects may the grade be “poor” (5) or “unsatisfactory” (6).
  • Overall average: An average of at least 3.0 must also be achieved in all subjects relevant for transfer.

The 10+ Program: Targeted Preparation for High School

The 10+ class is designed specifically for students who, after earning their Mittlere Reife or a comparable diploma, wish to pursue the Abitur.

Consolidating and Expanding Academic Foundations

Key content from the middle school years is systematically reviewed. Knowledge in the core high school subjects is deepened and expanded to build a solid foundation for the demands of the upper school. Here’s a look at our sample class schedules.

Developing independent learning skills

Grade 10+ is not just about subject knowledge. Our students learn to plan their tasks independently, make effective use of study time, and reflect on their own learning habits.

Earning the Abitur Even Without a Second Foreign Language

Didn’t take a second foreign language in Realschule or Werkrealschule? That doesn’t have to be an obstacle on the path to the Abitur. At Schloss-Schule Kirchberg, students in Grade 10+ have the opportunity to begin studying French as a second foreign language through the French placement test, thereby meeting the language requirements for their future educational path.

In this way, our Aufbaugymnasium also offers students who have previously studied only one foreign language the opportunity to earn the general-education Abitur.

Who is the 10+ class suitable for?

Our 10+ program is specifically designed for:

  • Students with a Mittlere Reife who meet the applicable admission requirements (Aufbaugymnasium)
  • Students transferring from other educational pathways
  • International students who are aiming to earn the German Abitur and meet the necessary requirements

Whether admission to the 10+ program is possible depends on the student’s previous educational path, academic performance, and the applicable admission requirements. We are happy to advise families personally on the available options.

Teachers can address questions specifically, closely monitor learning progress, and identify potential difficulties early on. In this way, personal strengths are specifically nurtured, individual learning needs are taken into account , and appropriate learning strategies are developed . In doing so, we support students in expanding their academic skills and learning with increasing independence and personal responsibility.

Personal Guidance on the Path to the Abitur

The path to the Abitur involves academic challenges and important decisions. The upper-level counseling service guides students as they plan their future educational paths and helps them stay focused on the requirements and opportunities of the upper-level high school curriculum.

Targeted Preparation for the Abitur Exams

To ensure students are well-prepared for the Abitur exams, the Schloss-Schule organizes an intensive week each year. Additional instruction in the exam-relevant subjects provides the opportunity to review key content in a targeted manner, deepen their knowledge, and clarify any remaining questions.

Secondary School with Boarding Facilities: Learning and Living in One Place

The Schloss-Schule Kirchberg brings together high school and boarding school in a unique learning and living community in the Hohenlohe region of Baden-Württemberg. However, students from the surrounding area are also warmly welcome at the Aufbaugymnasium and may attend the school without living in the boarding facility. For boarding students, classroom instruction, individualized learning support, and communal life come together to form a holistic educational and developmental experience.

Our boarding school offers a family-like environment where down-to-earth values, tolerance, appreciation, and mutual respect shape our interactions. We aim to guide our students as they find their own path to a fulfilling and happy life. The foundation of our educational work is an open-minded approach that values every child and young person based on their individual abilities and potential for growth. In doing so, we encourage our students to take responsibility for themselves and for others.

School and Boarding School: A Reliable Daily Structure and Supervised Study Periods

A structured daily routine provides boarding students with guidance and integrates classes, supervised study periods, and leisure time. Educational professionals support the students in planning their schoolwork, making effective use of study periods, and increasingly developing their own learning strategies. In the process, they learn to organize their school day independently and take responsibility for their own learning process.

Through close collaboration between the school and the boarding school, we can guide students’ academic development and provide targeted support as needed. In this way, we create a reliable framework that promotes individualized learning and helps students reach their full potential.

Community, Leisure, and Personal Development

The boarding school is also a place where students live together, form friendships, experience a sense of community, and grow personally. In this family-like environment, they learn to be considerate, resolve conflicts, and take responsibility for themselves and others. Our educational advisors guide them through their daily lives, stand by them when they face concerns or personal challenges, and help them find appropriate solutions.

Joint recreational activities as well as arts and crafts, music, and sports programs (e.g., horseback riding or basketball) offer students a wide range of opportunities todiscover their own interests and talents, develop new skills, and experience team spirit. In the process, students gain valuable experiences, build self-confidence, and learn to push themselves beyond their limits.

In this way, the boarding school combines academic support with a vibrant community life in which personal development, new experiences, and friendships all have their place.

Career Guidance: Discover Opportunities and Plan for the Future

Especially in Grade 10 and beyond, as well as in the upper grades of high school, students’ personal future prospects increasingly take center stage.
Our well-developed approach to career and college guidance, which has been awarded the BORIS seal of approval, guides our students on their path to their professional future. Through internships, college orientation days, in-school events, and partnerships with regional companies, they gain exposure to various career fields. Individual counseling from the Employment Agency and job application training help them discover their interests and plan their future educational path in a targeted manner.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Upper Secondary School Program

What is a state-approved upper-secondary school?

A gymnasium for advanced studies allows students who have earned their Mittlere Reife to continue their educational journey and pursue the Abitur. At the Schloss-Schule Kirchberg, Grade 10+ serves as the entry point to this educational path. It lays the academic foundation for the transition to the upper secondary level of the gymnasium and provides targeted preparation for the Abitur.

What does “Class 10+” mean at the Schloss-Schule Kirchberg?

The 10+ class prepares students from a variety of educational backgrounds for the upper secondary level. Students review and build upon their foundational knowledge in various subjects. In addition, the program promotes independent learning, effective study habits, and personal responsibility.

Does starting 10th grade at a Gymnasium after earning the Mittlere Reife count as repeating a grade?

When transferring to a Gymnasium with a Mittlere Reife, the standard length of schooling leading up to the Abitur is generally three years. At a G8 Gymnasium, this path covers grades 10, 11, and 12; at a G9 Gymnasium, it covers grades 11, 12, and 13. Grade 10 is therefore the standard entry grade when transferring to a G8 Gymnasium and is not a repeat year.

Is it possible to transfer to a Gymnasium after completing the Mittlere Reife, even without a second foreign language?

Yes, even students who did not take a second foreign language in Realschule or Werkrealschule can pursue the Abitur if they meet the applicable requirements. With its French catch-up course in 10th grade and above, the Schloss-Schule Kirchberg offers students the opportunity to start learning French as a second foreign language.

Is it possible to transfer to a Gymnasium with a Werkrealschule diploma?

Yes, that is possible if you have earned your Mittlere Reife and meet the general admission requirements.

Is it possible to transfer from another state?

Yes, it is possible to transfer from a school in another federal state. In doing so, we take into account the student’s previous educational path, the degree earned, the transcripts, and the courses already taken. The same admission requirements apply.
