Our experience as a boarding school shows that learning more efficiently does not begin with spending more time, but with knowing how.
Children and young people need guidance, structure, and effective learning strategies in order to develop their learning potential to the fullest.
This is precisely where modern learning concepts come in, as we pursue them at our boarding school and in our daily school practice. These principles have shaped our educational work at Schloss-Schule Kirchberg for many years and not only help the children and young people in our care—much of it can also be adopted by other children and young people in their learning practices!
What really helps children and young people learn?
Clear structures provide security
Efficient learning requires a reliable framework. Fixed learning times, clear procedures, and realistic goals help students maintain an overview and reduce stress. Those who know when, how long, and what they are learning can concentrate much better.
Learning to learn: a key skill for life
Many children do not know how to learn effectively. They read texts several times without really understanding them, or learn “at the last minute.”
In contrast, the following are helpful when learning:
- Meaningful learning planning
- Active repetition
- Comprehensible summarizing
- Regular reflection on one's own learning path
These skills can be developed in a targeted manner—and that is precisely a central component of our educational approach.
Motivation comes from success
Children learn best when they realize: I'm making progress. I understand. I can do this. The following are effective: small, achievable milestones, positive feedback, and an environment that supports rather than overwhelms. All of this generates lasting joy in learning and self-confidence.
How do we implement the principles of effective learning at Schloss-Schule?
As a boarding school in Baden-Württemberg with many years of experience, we know that theory alone is not enough. Consistent implementation in independent learning and everyday school life is crucial.
At Schloss-Schule Kirchberg, we therefore combine:
- Lessons and supervised study periods
- Method training (“learning to learn”)
- Individual educational support
Especially in grades 5 to 9, we support our students in structuring their homework themselves (!) in a meaningful way, using learning phases effectively, and developing more independence step by step.
Our goal is not to control the children down to the last detail, but to enable them to take responsibility for their own learning.
Why should attention be paid to creating a learning-friendly environment for children?
A good learning environment makes all the difference. Peace and quiet, fixed structures, approachable adults, and clear expectations create conditions in which learning can succeed. At our school and boarding school, learning is understood as part of life – supported by our mission statement “Live. Learn. Work.”
This holistic view is our specific approach to optimally combining academic performance, positive personal development, and the acquisition of social skills. Our goal: sustainable success in learning and life instead of a short-term focus on grades. We support children and young people with the aim of strengthening them in the long term – academically, methodologically, and personally. And our experience shows that those who have learned to learn in this way are more confident in dealing with challenges, gain time, self-confidence, and enjoyment in their own abilities.
